Best Things to do with Kids in Downtown Toronto

After living in Toronto consistently for about a year now, and realizing how much it has to offer for free to little ones, I decided I needed to start making a list for other parents to benefit from.

I’ve been coming to Toronto for almost 10 years now. I spent a lot of time here while Waseem and I were just dating as well as while we were married and now after we’ve had Zayd. Since Zayd was only born 2 and a half years ago, I’ve only been discovering things to do around downtown with a child in my recent relationship with Toronto. In the last year or so I’ve learned so much about where to take him, including a bunch of places that are free! The longer I live in Toronto with a kid, the more I see why people live here with kids. It really does just have so much to offer even for those who don’t want to be constantly spending an arm and a leg to keep the kids busy (which is all of us, right?)

Below are our favorite places to visit in downtown Toronto. These are all the free options we frequent often. I’ll make another list of places that are also great to visit but come with a cost.

Riverdale Farm

Riverdale Farm Location can be found here.
Riverdale Park East Location can be found here.
When to visit: Open 365 days a year! Even during holidays.

This has by far been Zayd’s favorite place to visit since he was about a year old. Riverdale farm is a beautiful farm with animals in the heart of downtown. It really is hard to believe that just a few minutes down the road you’re back in the hustle and bustle of it all. The grounds are just stunning. It’s amazing that it can look so different with each season.

They have an adequate number of farm animals inside barns and out in stables that are always fun to watch. Unfortunately there isn’t a petting zoo aspect, but there are a couple barns that can be visited when it’s a little colder. One of the barns houses sheep, goats and an occasional kitty. The other barn is where you’ll find chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, and even bunnies.

Outside the landscape is adorable, like something straight out of a children’s book. Wooden fences around the horses and cows, several vegetable gardens and even a windmill. At the end of one of the paths there’s a pretty pond where you’ll sometimes see ducks, there are a few picturesque spots too with lots of flowers in the spring/summer months.

I could go on and on about this farm and all it offers to its community but I’ll let you discover the rest of its hidden gems (as well as a Halloween event they put on every year with a boo barn. so cute!) They also have a kids room that’s got some toy farm animals and books that’s only open when they have special events but a great spot to visit.

Did I mention I’ve been coming to this farm for almost 10 years now and that includes coming several times with Waseem while we were still dating. Yes! This is an awesome place for a date!

Last thing, if you walk through the farm and out the other end, you will end up at the bottom of Riverdale park East. This in my opinion, is one of the absolute BEST parks in all of Toronto. The most stunning view of the city you will ever see! Once you get to the top of the hill on Broadview Ave, enjoy the view and get a great cup of coffee or a snack from Rooster Coffee House.

Allen Gardens

Garden can be found here.
Playground can be found here.
When to visit: Open 365 days a year.

Ladies and gentlemen I want to introduce you to our second most favorite spot in the city, Allen Gardens. I think this is my favorite, Zayd I think would still choose the farm as his but this is definitely a runner up (they have fish and turtles!). Another place Waseem and I have been coming to forever. I have pictures of us when we were so young, wild and free in here, as well as pictures of us while I was pregnant and now some with Zayd of course.

(I’ll just leave these right here 🙂 )

Allen Gardens is one of the oldest parks in Toronto. It’s got a beautiful plant conservatory that sits on a great park with a fenced playground and two significantly large dog parks (One is for big dogs, the other is for smaller ones).  The conservatory has several different climate controlled rooms and so much greenery in a very concrete jungle part of the city. It is an oasis. Humble in its size compared to other botanical gardens, it is tastefully landscaped. Each room has a different feel to it with totally different plants and flowers. They have the tropical room that is quite humid (this is where the pond and the turtles are), a couple of rooms that have a similar temperature to what’s outdoors (a little warmer so no need for your jacket when you’re inside the gardens at all), a center palm room and my favorite, the desert room.

The fish and turtles are a huge draw for Zayd but I think he subconsciously loves being surrounded by all the greenery and flowers. He also gets pretty excited to visit during the winter months because they set up a little train that’s constantly moving around in one of the corners that he just loves to watch. The playground is right behind the conservatory so I usually take Zayd to both when we plan our visit. A great way to spend a couple of hours!

Keep an eye out for events the garden holds by checking the bulletin boards at the entrances. During the summer they have a weekly event where you can bring your kids to play in one of their gated outdoor gardens. Kids get to water the plants, do some muddy play and make art with volunteers, all completely free (donations appreciated). We only got to it once last year but Zayd really enjoyed it!

The Children’s Book Bank

Book Bank can be found here.
When to visit: Daily from 10 am onward. Closed on Sundays and most holidays.

The children’s book bank is a place we totally stumbled upon last summer. My cousin Nour and her son Badr were visiting us for a month so we were always out and about exploring. One day when we were on our way back from our favorite farm, we walked right past this place and decided to check it out. The book bank looks like it used to be someones home and has now been converted into this absolutely adorable space that we loved just as much as the kiddos did!

There are three separate rooms filled with books, a couple cozy places to sit and read with your little’s, a table to do some coloring and finally every kids favorite, a fish tank! The books are all organized really well by age (books from birth to 12 years) and category and we always find books Zayd’s interested in exploring.

This place isn’t just great for all the reasons I listed above but also, everyone who takes a trip to the book bank, can leave with a book of their own for free! Yup, hard to believe I know. It really is an amazing concept and I really do find it helps build your child’s love for reading. Although you can’t just walk in as a Mom without your kiddo to pick out a book for him while he’s at daycare (I tried lol), they have a policy where adults unaccompanied by children are actually not even allowed to visit. Makes total sense. It’s actually kind of cute if you think of it, this is the one place in the city where your kid is the star of the show and your ticket to get you into that special “club” 🙂

Finally, the book bank will actually take back old books your child isn’t interested in anymore. I find this is a great way to teach kids the concept of donating what they no longer need or want. (Teach them how to live mindfully while they’re young and it will be something they can benefit from for the rest of their lives!) We highly recommend the book bank! Oh, and it’s not too far from Riverdale Farm so would be a great addition to your day out and about.

Toronto Railway Museum

Museum can be found here.
Roundhouse Playground can be found here.
When to visit: Hours can be found here.

When it’s warm out you can find us here! Zayd is a typical kid in a sense that he just loves his trains. We ride the subway on our way to and from school when it’s chilly out and he just can’t seem to get enough. Always looking to say hi to the operator as we get on and off the subway and always hoping they’ll honk the horn for him (a lot of the time they do and it just makes his day!).

This museum is totally free and really nice to check out. You can get on and off all the trains but can’t really go inside them. There are metal steering wheels the kids love to play with and I think just being able to be on an old train like these is fun.

A fun aspect of this museum is the mini train you can ride with your kid when it’s operating (Returns May 2020). The train takes a ride around the grounds and even honks its horn. A really fun ride for kids and parents as well. This is the only thing that costs a couple bucks to do but totally worth it.

Finally, after getting some train time in check out The Roundhouse Playground located right next to the museum.

Pam McConnell Aquatic Center

Aquatic center can be found here.
Regent Park can be found here.
When to visit: Daily as early at 7 am.

A really fun place to take the kids is the aquatic center. This is a stunningly modern looking facility that has three swimming pools and even an indoor water slide! We’ve only ever been here one time but I plan on going back in the near future. With lots of windows, it’s so bright and really aesthetically pleasing. The showers and locker areas are very clean and well managed. The pools are monitored with several lifeguards for peace of mind.

I think the reason we haven’t gone more often is because I actually need to go swimming with Zayd and I don’t always feel like it haha. I imagine we’ll be going more often now that he’s getting older and I would like him to learn how to swim before the summertime comes around.

The center has a bunch of swim classes (registered and drop ins) for kids from 6 months onward as well as programs for adults who want to learn how to swim. Aqua aerobics classes are also available. They also have programs for kids and adults with disability (therapy pools) which I think is just amazing.

After swimming make sure to visit the attached playground in Regent Park.

Jill & The Beanstalk

Jill & The Beanstalk location can be found here.
Jill & The Beanstalk’s events can be found here.
Music Together Classes website can be found here.

I discovered this great community based store while looking for a music class for Zayd. This place has a children’s store up front with tons of great products (free downtown Toronto delivery!) for your little ones including a couple awesome consignment sections. I really enjoy looking through their clothes and shoes for my little guy and have often scored some great finds.

The back end of this store has a room that is used for various community events and open play times. They’ve got a shelving unit with a bunch of kids toys and books and often have drop in times and song circle meets. We visit the store once a week for our music class that Zayd really enjoys called Music Together (this is a paid program but so worth it if you’re looking to do something fun with your kiddo. They have various locations too so if this store isn’t convenient for you check out their other spots). Find Toronto locations here.

Make sure to check out Jill & The Beanstalk’s website for a list of all the workshops and events they hold. Last week I attended a potty training workshop that was so great I was able to potty train Zayd in just three days!! Yes, you heard that correctly. Other programs they offer include a breastfeeding monthly support group, baby speech and language workshops, infant and child first aid and CPR, sleep workshops and much more!

Jill & The Beanstalk truly is a great gem in the community and I’m so glad we stumbled upon it!

The Menagerie Pet Shop

Pet shop can be found here.
When to visit: Weekly as early at 10:30 am

A really fun pet shop to take kids to (and adults!) is The Menagerie Pet Shop. This is one of the only pet shops in downtown Toronto that actually has pets (as opposed to just selling pet supplies, but they sell those as well). They have a reptile section with various tanks to check out, a bird room, a fish area and a section with hamsters and other little critters.

Zayd and I have been visiting this spot for about a year now and we truly enjoy it. One of the reasons we like visiting this pet shop as often as we do is to see our friend Josh. Josh is a character, is super informed about the animals in the shop and seems to really enjoy teaching people about them. He’s also really good at talking with kids.

I’ll never forget the first time we visited the store and Josh took out a snake to show Zayd. It was the first time he’d ever seen a snake up close and was pretty scared. After getting closer and closer to it (and me putting the snake around my neck) he eventually started to touch it and get more and more comfortable until he was so comfortable that he actually gave it a kiss! That was huge for me as a Mom. It just showed me that if my kid is afraid of something, I can help remove that fear if I show him that his own mother isn’t afraid. Josh helped with that. We take anyone who visits us to this shop and everyone enjoys it. Josh also has a few videos on YouTube worth checking out that you can find here.

High Park Zoo

Zoo can be found here.
When to visit: All year round. Open daily from 7 am to dusk

High Park Zoo is a free zoo in the middle of the beautiful High Park. There are 11 enclosed paddocks with various animals ranging from reindeer, sheep, capybara, bison, peacocks and even emu. It’s not as big as the Toronto Zoo and not half as hard to get to (you don’t need a car to get there like you do to get to the Toronto Zoo).

Besides the fact that there are no cars in the area and the kids can run free, they also open the Llama pen on the weekends where you can touch the Llamas! I call that a win win.

There is a lot to discover at High Park. One of our favorite summertime activities to pair with a trip to the zoo is a visit to the parks splash pad and playground.

Hope you enjoyed my list of the best free things to do with your kids in Toronto. If there are places you’ve discovered that I missed please put them in the comments and help other families keep busy on a budget!

All Things Travel, Travel Tips

5 Steps to Airbnb like a Pro

If you’ve never stayed at an Airbnb before and are feeling hesitant, here are our best tips to make booking that dream home just a little bit easier.

And if you’re still not sure Airbnb is for you, check out my Airbnb Addict post to become convinced!

(An Airbnb we stayed at in Seminyak, Bali)

Make an Airbnb account if you don’t already have one

This is the first step in wanting to stay at an Airbnb. You won’t be able to stay at a home without one. Setting up an account is pretty straight forward. You’ll need your basic information; name, email, password, birthday and a short paragraph about yourself. This paragraph is what hosts read when they’re trying to decide if they’re comfortable with you staying in their home. Make sure you write a detailed description about yourself and your family (if you have a family you travel with), being as personal as you can. The more you share, the better. If you’ve never used Airbnb before and have no reviews yet, your description is especially important.

Start your hunt for the perfect home

This is the fun part and why I love this company so much. So this is what I usually do when I’m planning a new trip. I’ll first decide if I want to stay in one or two homes while I’m traveling. Waseem and I don’t really ever travel for less than 10 days at a time to one place, and if we do, we will almost always split our trip down the middle so that we can stay in two homes on opposite sides of the city, so we feel like we got to see as much as we could on our trip. I will then zoom in on the area I’m interested in and open up a new tab with each home I find interesting.

(An Airbnb we stayed at in Mattituck, NY)

Send messages to hosts whose homes you’re considering

I then narrow it down to 3 or 4 that I think are the most exciting to us and immediately send the host a message asking if their home is available for my dates (the calendars are sometimes off) to open up communication lines and buy us some time to decide where we want to stay. Then I’ll just wait to hear back from the hosts I messaged and compare and contrast all homes that are available and decide where we want to stay then. A big part of making our decision is reading the reviews the home has. If I’m torn between two places, the one with the better reviews always wins. Some homes also have “super hosts” (there will be a small medal near their name up top) and those are the ones we tend to lean towards.

I think sending messages to hosts before booking is a great way to ask any questions or give the host the opportunity to ask you anything they may want to know about you or your family, or what type of trip you’re taking for example. We recently traveled to Bali and while I was looking for an Airbnb for Waseem and I and our son Zayd, I wanted to know if the hosts had a baby cot for Zayd to sleep in so I asked them all in the messages I sent prior to booking. Just a good way to add an extra step to help with the choosing which home to stay at option.

Review every home you stay at

A tip I can’t stress the importance of enough is reviewing the homes you stay at even if you didn’t enjoy your stay. Airbnb works as a model because of reviews. The fact that you are able to learn more about a place by what others say about it is key to the type of experience you’ll have. When I’m looking at a potential home I want to stay at, reviews are everything. The pictures could be amazing, the location could be on point, the price could be out of this world, but if there are no reviews or none that excite me, I’ll immediately forget the place and move on. By the same token, if the pictures could be better and the location not the best and the price a little more than I want to spend but the reviews are really great and the host seems to really care about their guests, I’ll be more likely to keep it in the running.

What’s really awesome about writing reviews on Airbnb is that, you won’t be able to review a host until your stay is over. After your stay, the host is given a week to review you and you are given a week to review your host. What’s great is that neither of you will be able to read the others review if you don’t both write one! This entices you to write one even more!

(An Airbnb houseboat we stayed at in Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

Ask if it would be possible to get a discount (nicely)

Last but not least, always ask if you can get a price deduction. It doesn’t always work, but sometimes it does and it’s so so great when it does! A little treat to get you even more pumped for your new adventure!

Airbnb Addict

If you’re new to Airbnb be prepared to become addicted! In the past you were forced to stay in hotels when you traveled, and hotels can be great, if you’re going away for work that is. If you’re going away with family or a group of friends, there’s nothing more convenient and fun than being able to share a kitchen and a comfy living room couch together. Gone are the days where everyone gets their own room and has to call each other to coordinate what time to meet in the lobby!

Waseem and I used to stay in little boutique hotels when we traveled. The smaller the hotel the better in our opinion because we enjoyed feeling like actual people instead of just being numbers. When you stay at a small hotel you’re treated more like a friend or even family sometimes. Big hotels barely know you’re staying there. How many times did you walk into the lobby of the Marriott let’s say to use the bathroom and think, I wonder if anyone will notice I don’t have a room here haha (and of course that never happens)

(Airbnbs we stayed at in Long Island, NY – Achrafieh, Beirut and Bali, Indonesia)

Airbnb has been around since 2008 believe it or not. It took Waseem and I a few years to get comfortable with the idea (we stayed at our first Airbnb in 2014), but once we discovered how much we loved staying in someones home in a city we’d never visited before, we were hooked! Since our first apartment in Berlin, we’ve since stayed in places all over the world thanks to this amazing company! I believe Airbnb has given people the flexibility to see more of the world through the eyes of a local as well as offer lots more variety in the price you can pay per night while traveling.

(Airbnbs we stayed at in Canggu, Bali – Sanur, Bali and Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

One of the best parts of staying in an Airbnb is the fact that you can really find some unique homes to enjoy, which ultimately adds so much to your travel experience! You may not know this, but you will enjoy a city a lot more if you’re staying in a home that is loved and cared for, than if you were staying in a typical hotel room with a minibar and a bed. With the number of places to rent on Airbnb, it’s sometimes even hard to choose! It can take me weeks to decide where we want to spend our time, and we’ve almost always gone away and stayed in several homes in the same city just to be able to get a few nights in each!

Thanks to Airbnb we’ve stayed in several houseboats in Amsterdam, a tiny rooftop apartment in Beirut, a cozy little hideaway spot with a huge glass skylight in Berlin, an unbelievable house on a cliff overlooking the Indian ocean in Bali, a cute tiny renovated studio in Chicago, a very traditional apartment in Vietnam and a couple places high up in the high-rises of Dubai. It really is amazing!

(Airbnbs we stayed at in Nusa Dua, Bali – Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Long Island, NY)

If you’ve never stayed at an Airbnb before, we highly recommend giving it a try! And if you’re feeling intimidated by it, I’m more than happy to give you a hand finding the perfect place. Feel free to send me a DM on Instagram or a comment down below.

About Us, All Things Travel, Uncategorized

Why Did We Decide to Travel?

Waseem and I have loved travel for pretty much forever. We each grew up in families that moved around a lot and enjoyed spending summers abroad. To us, it had become more normal to be on the move than it was to stay put in one place for more than about 3 months at a time.

Soon after we first got married in Upstate NY, we moved back home to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with the mindset that settling down there and working for a few years would help us save up some money to start our lives together. After living and working in Saudi Arabia for three years, we decided it wasn’t really the best fit for us. As a labor and delivery nurse working in one of the biggest hospitals in the city, the large workload due to under-staffing, and the lack of appreciation for nurses slowly started to drain me. Waseem had also been working for a non-profit at the time that had stopped paying it’s staff for months, and didn’t look like it was going to anytime soon.

In the meantime we were at the beginning of starting our own little business in our kitchen making beard oil. Waseem started growing a beard at the time and was having a hard time finding the right oils to keep it moisturized and well kempt. When we did our research and found that there really was a gap in the market, and beard oil was hard to come by in one of the hairiest countries known to man, we decided to give it a try and make our own. We’re going on three years now, and we can’t imagine our life any other way. It’s not easy owning and operating our own business, but it sure does give us the flexibility we need to travel (and we loooove to travel!). We’re lucky enough that we can be pretty much anywhere and still be able to get things done for Diggn’ It as long as we have some internet.

Meanwhile we decided to start our family, and our little guy Zayd came along June 2017! He was really the one who gave us the push to do some traveling. No better time than the present to seize the moment and take Zayd on some adventures before having to be more attached to a single location when school starts one day. Bali it was! Since we’d visited Bali a couple years ago and loved it, we knew that was where we had to go. So we packed our bags and headed to the beautiful Island to enjoy more quality time together and just slow down our fast paced lives being in cities and what an adventure it was!

19 Best Places to Eat in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

While we were in Ho Chi Minh City we found some really great restaurants and cafes. Here are the ones that made our list!

If you’re interested in our list of the best restaurants in the beach town Nha Trang, Vietnam click here.

CUC GACH QUAN

Waseem and I kind of stumbled upon this Vietnamese restaurant while exploring a neighborhood and I’m really glad we did. From the outside it looks like a home and once you go inside you understand why. This restaurant has two buildings, across the street from each other. The buildings used to be home that have now been converted into restaurants. The menu was extremely long so we asked our waiter for some help with what to order and she recommended some really great dishes. Nothing disappointed. You basically order a big bowl of rice and a few dishes to mix with the rice. Definitely worth checking out. A little on the pricier side for Vietnam but we’d go again.

Price: $$$
Must Try Dish: Egg Tofu

RICO TACO

This is a really really adorable (and delicious) Mexican restaurant! The food is so fresh and colorful. Basically exactly what you would picture a good Mexican restaurant to be. They have happy hour daily with some discounted dishes and drinks and they give you a bowl of popcorn! We will definitely be visiting this place again before we leave this city. So worth it.

Price: $$
Must Try Dish: Fish Burrito

Staff Loves Kids: Kind of

PHO 24

Pho 24 is a chain that you’ll see pretty readily all around the city. When you’re a tourist I think it’s a bit harder to try the Pho from the little Mom and Pop restaurants with the plastic chairs on the side of the road. This place is a good option if you’re looking to test our some Pho. Their soups are pretty flavorful and affordable. It’s also good to know the flavor will be consistent at any of their branches. Maybe one day we’ll get the courage to try some street-side Pho but until then this is a great option. Oh, and we had it for breakfast.

Must Try Dish: Beef Balls Pho

THE VINTAGE EMPORIUM

Great little place for breakfast. The decor is really unique with a vintage feel, and very pretty tiles on the ground. The food was delicious. We had the shakshouka and the french toast. Oh and definitely try their hot Vietnamese milk coffee, it comes to the table in their traditional coffee making pot and is brewed right in front of you.

KING KEBAB

For a quick, delicious, on the go meal, check out King Kebab. It’s in the Backpacking district so there’s lots of action in and around this area. From the outside this doesn’t really seem like a place we would have been interested to try out, but the food definitely makes up for the less than exciting interior. They have plates and sandwiches too. This is another place we’ll probably visit before we leave, especially since you don’t really see kebab places so often around here.

CAU BA QUAN

Waseem and I heard about this restaurant after watching the show Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix. We thought we may as well check out the places he visited on the show especially this one cause the food just looked so good! Well, we’re really glad we did. If we didn’t see this place on TV we would have never checked it out. The place looks very ordinary from the outside with the typical Vietnamese restaurant plastic tables and chairs but the food definitely makes up for the boring cub appeal. We ordered exactly what Phil did on the show and it was all really good. The Cajun shrimp platter was so flavorful and the happy salad was unlike any salad we’d ever tried before. Oh, and every time we saw a foreign couple sit down, we knew they definitely Netflix-ed and Chilled haha Give this place a try, you won’t be disappointed!

THE SNAP CAFE

We checked this place out because we wanted to see what District 2 was like. We stopped by here for breakfast before checking out the Vincom mall that’s just around the corner. I have to say the English muffin egg sandwich was a bit tasteless and disappointing but the coffee was pretty good. I usually wouldn’t put a place like this on my list since I didn’t really enjoy the food but they had an extensive menu so I’d be willing to give it another try and also I think this place is worth checking out if you have kids. It’s actually very nicely done with a small village feel and lots of little shops in the entryway to the restaurant. But the main reason I’d go back to this place is the really nice sized playground they have in the back. You can sit at a picnic table and do some work or just enjoy a coffee while your kids play on the jungle gym right across from you. Great little place to check out, just skip English muffin egg sandwich!

B.O.C Homemade BBQ

We were heading to another restaurant nearby that ended up not having food that night so we decided to have dinner at this place instead. The food was very good. Unfortunately a couple of the dishes we wanted to order they didn’t have. The outdoor seating, music and overall atmosphere of the place was great though. The BBQ people were eating looked delicious and the place was pretty happening for a Wednesday night at 6:30 (Yup, thank you Zayd haha)

BELGO THE BELGIAN BREWERY

Really yummy Belgian restaurant in the heart of district 1. We had Belgian frites, Fish fingers and a Belgian waffle and everything we so so good. The overall vibe of the place is very upbeat and happening. Waseem and I felt like we were out at a nice lounge for the night (even though Zayd was sitting at the table with us in the highchair). The decor is pretty cool too. They’ve got a motorcycle hanging from the ceiling and some top hats as lamp shades. Great interior and great overall feel and really great food! We felt like we went to Belgium for dinner.

PHO THIN HA NOI

This restaurant serves a Northern style Pho from Hanoi. We’re still not sure how the taste differs from Pho that’s from Ho Chi Minh City but it was definitely delicious. The broth was very flavorful and the Beef Steak Pho we ordered wasn’t as fatty as the beef sometimes is. It’s a bit hard to find this place so I’ve linked the location in the heading on google maps. I’ve also added a picture of the front so that it’s easy to spot. It is right next to a supermarket.

PHO HOA PASTEUR

This Pho place ranks as one of the best places to enjoy Vietnam’s famous noodle soups. It has been run by the same family for generations and the broth recipe is a family secret. The restaurant is pretty big with a two story dining room and ample seating. It’s usually on the busier side and seems to be popular among locals and tourists alike. The Pho was really flavorful and filling as Pho usually is. Not sure I can tell the difference between amazing Pho and really good Pho yet but this place was one we’d have again.

Must Try Dish: Vegetarian Pho

NONLA GUYS

We stumbled upon this place while walking down an alley in the backpacking district. It’s a very cute little Mexican-Korean fusion restaurant. We ordered some food to take home and the staff immediately stood out as very helpful and attentive. The Vegan Tofu Burrito was very flavorful and not grotesquely huge like typical burritos can be. We’d stop by this place again if we were in the area.

MAM VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT

This is a really delicious Vietnamese restaurant with lots of sharing style dishes. We found this place the day we arrives in the city right after dropping our stuff at the apartment. It was down the street from us and luckily also across the street from the must try LA VIET CAFE (great place to pick up an iced Vietnamese coffee after you have lunch here). A little on the pricier end for a Vietnamese restaurant but you won’t be disappointed. They close at 2 pm though so grab some lunch here. SUSHI NHI

This cute little Sushi joint is located in Japantown, an area with tons of great little hidden Japanese restaurants. We heard about this place through a food blog I found and decided to give it a try because it had great reviews and also was supposed to be some of the most affordable sushi in the city. We got there at 5pm and were immediately asked if we had a reservation. We didn’t. Luckily, we arrived as they were opening (They’re only open for dinner) and were able to find a table pretty quickly. We were warned though, that we should definitely make a reservation if we decided to come again. The food was delicious! Really fresh fish and yummy rolls. Waseem and I love Sashimi specifically so we ordered a bunch. The food was so good we kept the menu nearby and kept ordering more food! The best part was getting the bill and having it come up to less than $20! And we had ordered so much food! Needless to say, we went back again before we left Saigon. A must visit if you’re into sushi or Japanese food in general. The menu is extensive with bowl and meats and soups as well.

BURGER JOINT SAIGON

This place makes one of the best burgers in Saigon. Each burger is made to order and in my opinion is the perfect size. They have the option of a double patty, a single patty or a patty and a half. The meat is so flavorful. They also have some of the best french fries in the city. Thin and crispy just the way we like them. Zayd had his first burger ever here, he loved it. We went back a second time!

PHUONG MAI VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT

One of the days we were in Saigon it was pouring rain and we needed to grab some food near the apartment we were staying at. Waseem got on his phone and quickly found this vegetarian place down the block from us. The place was pretty busy so we were lucky we found a table. We ordered an assortment of things so we could try it all. Everything we ordered was really great. It’s the best when you find a vegetarian place that has good food and doesn’t make you feel like you missed out on having meat for that meal. The food here is so flavorful and really anything you order on the menu is a hit. We checked it out another time and it was just as good and just as crowded. Also, this place has a meditation room upstairs that’s free and you can check it out before or after your meal.

BANH MI 362

Banh Mi 362 is what I call the “Subway” of Saigon. Except, we don’t really ever eat subway. This place though we had almost every other day on our trip! Something to mention is that it’s a franchise so you’ll be able to find it all over. For anyone who wants to eat Banh Mi Sandwiches but is a bit weary about going the fast food, little old lady street cart route, this is a great option. We loved the prices as well as you can get a sandwich for about $2 bucks. Score! Quick, delicious and budget friendly, you’re definitely speaking our language.

CONG CAPHE

We didn’t know this Cafe was a franchise when we first found it in Nha Trang, Vietnam, there are a few branched around Ho Chi Minh City though. They don’t have their hot coconut coffee in HCMC unfortunately but the cold coconut coffee is really worth a try as well. Although, it feels more like you’re drinking a frappuccino than a coffee. Still delicious and we’d definitely recommend.

LA VIET CAFE

We found this coffee shop the day we arrived in Saigon and we’re so glad we did because we’d stopped by there almost every day since! The cafe itself is really nicely put together and almost feels like a trendy cafe in Brooklyn with it’s wood, leather and tweed furniture and coffee roaster in the front of the room. It feel very hip and the coffee is so good. They also have some breakfast items that are delicious.

7 Best Places to Eat in Nha Trang, Vietnam

If you’ve already checked out our favorite places to eat in Bali, (Ubud and Canggu) Here’s our list of the best places we found to grab a bite to eat or have a refreshing drink in Nha Trang, Vietnam.

CONG CAPHE

Unfortunately we found this cafe the day before we left Nha Trang. It’s the cutest little place with a real Vietnamese feel. The Olive green colors, the vintage Vietnamese clothing hung on the wall and the flower pattern pillows feel like something out of a movie. The first day we checked this place out we tried their signature hot coconut coffee and it’s fantastic, perfectly strong and just sweet enough. We also tried another one of their signature drinks, the cold coconut Vietnamese coffee. So good. Can you tell we love coconuts?

LIVIN COLLECTIVE

I’d been telling Waseem that I really wanted some BBQ for months! (We didn’t have any for the entire time we were in Bali) We were so glad when we found this place on TripAdvisor. The food was delicious! Finally some great comfort food. The restaurant is nicely set up too with outdoor picnic tables and some great music, a really nice overall vibe. Plus this was the only place we found in Nha Trang with a high chair so needless to say we were all pretty happy about that.

ALPACA

It was a nice surprise finding this healthy cafe. There unfortunately aren’t many healthy options in Nha Trang. Love the decor and overall feel of this cafe. The alpaca illustrations on the outside and inside add a nice colorful feel and the food was delicious. We had some great fish tacos and a very flavorful salad and gnocchi dish. Also a pretty big plus to this place is the fact that they have a small children’s kitchen play area on the second floor. Hours of fun!

KIWAMI SUSHI

Another cuisine we hadn’t had in months, sushi! So naturally we went looking for it when we got to the beach town with fresh fish being sold on every corner. This tiny little place is only open for dinner and gets pretty busy. Their sushi was delicious and really fresh. The chef kept coming to our table and interacting with Zayd which was pretty adorable. It was even sweeter because he didn’t speak any English and was interacting with him in Japanese. Definitely glad we chose this sushi restaurant over the other one down the street. It’s a little pricier than others but it’s worth every penny.

MIX RESTAURANT

The last day we were in Nha Trang we had a sick baby so we couldn’t really go out to eat. While I was home cuddling our baby boy, Waseem went out hunting and grabbed us some chicken sandwiches from this super popular Greek restaurant down the block. The chicken sandwiches (Souvlakis) we SO good that we decided to pick up a couple more sandwiches from there for dinner. This time we tried the smoked tuna Souvlakis and damn were they good! We’d never tried smokes tuna and having it in a sandwich seemed absurd! So glad we tried them and if we were there a few more days we definitely would have had them again. Also, on a side note, the restaurant was so busy, the line to sit at a table was around the block!

RAINFOREST

This has to be one of the most uniquely designed restaurants we’ve ever been to. It has a tree house feel with a big tree in the entryway, a huge wooden slide from the second floor and lots of swinging benches around picnic tables throughout the place. We weren’t so impressed by the food we ordered but the yogurt with fresh fruit we got for Zayd we delicious. Also, everyone around us seemed to be having coffee or tea so I think this would be a great place to take a break during a day of sightseeing and enjoy a really strong but yummy Vietnamese coffee.

YASHODA INDIAN RESTAURANT

The food at this restaurant was on point. We’d been looking for Indian food for a while and this place definitely hit the spot. The interior is very bland and boring and almost felt like we were in a school cafeteria but the food makes up for it. If you’re looking for a good hearty Indian dinner, this is the place to check out. Oh, and they had one of our favorite dishes that we always have a hard time finding, Palak Paneer. Yum!

About Us, All Things Travel, Travel Tips

Our Best Family Travel Tips

We’ve been traveling for a while now and we’re definitely not experts, but we’ve picked up a few things along the way. Below are our top travel tips.

1. Always try to stay at AirBnbs
We’re not really the hotel-staying type. For starters we definitely need accessibility to a kitchen since we’re always on the move and we have a young child. We’ve been using Airbnb since 2014 and have stayed in more than 25 different homes all over the world! (Berlin, Amsterdam, Beirut, Chicago, Bali, Vietnam and Dubai to name a few!). I’ve become such a pro at researching and booking places on Airbnb that I would say out of the 25 different places we’ve stayed, we’ve only really had bad experiences in maybe 2 of them. When you stay in Airbnbs, it feels less like you’re visiting and more like you’re living there.

2. Enjoy some Pb&J sandwiches!
It’s not practical to eat all our meals out, not to mention that it can become pricey. Waseem and I usually have about two meals a day, breakfast and an early dinner. Zayd I would say has two big meals also but does more snacking throughout the day than we do. Peanut better and Jam are the two first things we buy at the supermarket when we first arrive in a new city. Sometimes it’s hard to find healthy options but we do our best. We usually put some banana in our pb & j sandwiches as well to add some more sustenance. Luckily Zayd’s not allergic to anything so peanut butter is something he’s been introduced to since he was about 8 months old and he loves it! I would say we have at least 3-4 sandwiches a week. They’re a great easy go to and can be packed into a day-pack and enjoyed on the go!

3. When shopping less is more (and bring a camera)
It can be tempting to buy all kinds of souvenirs when traveling. From pretty rattan bags and colorful sarongs in Bali to cute wooden clogs in Amsterdam to bags and bags of delicious coffee in Vietnam! Because Waseem and I try to travel as compact and light as possible I would say we take more pictures of things we may want to buy rather than actually buy them. Most of the time you get excited when traveling and buy things in the spur of the moment that you may use on your trip, but these purchases actually end up sitting at the bottom of a closet back home. Every once in a while we’ll make the odd cute baby Bali tourist shirt for Zaydo but I find that the next time I’m packing to move on to our next destination, the shirt for example will only bother me when I have to find room for it. We generally will take pictures of things we may want to buy and veto actually buying them!

4. Use packing cubes, lots of them
I’m a bit OCD when it comes to packing for trips. It usually takes me the entire day before our flight to organize and pack our suitcases. I generally like everything to be in an order that makes it easy to pack and unpack. Our Eagle Creek packing cubes have been absolute life savers! First thing I do is layout all of our clothes in neat piles on the bed. Then, I’ll designate packing cubes for each pile and roll the clothes into them so they fit perfectly. Finally, I’ve started using post its and writing what’s in each pack to label them (okay, very OCD). I find that this makes it really easy to unpack at our next destination. Unless we’re staying somewhere for a week or more I’ll keep the clothes in the packs and just lay them out on a surface making it easy to find things we’re looking for. If we stay somewhere for longer than a week, I will sometimes unpack the packs and put our clothes in a closet. Definitely wouldn’t be able to pack and unpack as much as we do without these amazing cubes! They are truly life savers.

5. Keep Zayd’s sleeping arrangement as consistent as possible
When we decided we were going to start traveling I knew I had to find a travel cot that was light and easily portable for Zayd to sleep in. At around 6 months we moved Zayd from sleeping in the Chicco Next2Me Co-Sleeper to a crib at the foot of the bed so he wouldn’t see that we were in the room with him and want to wake up and play. It worked! After lots of research we decided to go with the Phil & Teds Travel Cot. It’s the lightest cot on the market weighing less than the baby (it only weighs 6 lbs!) and is just the right size for any bedroom you end up in while traveling. It also comes with a compact self inflating mattress pad. I love that Zayd is always sleeping in a familiar spot. It really makes it easy to be moving around as frequently as we are. The first night sometimes takes him a little time to get comfortable as he sees the room is different, but shortly after that he’s fast asleep and we can all breathe a sigh of relief. We also bring along Zayds nest from Etsy. I love it but really wish I had purchased a nest from this amazing company LoveBirdsSewingCo. Their nests are absolutely adorable! Such beautiful patterns and the fabric seems to be extremely durable for indoor and outdoor use. I will definitely be investing in one of these if and when we decide to grow our little family! You can also check out their Instagram account here.

All Things Travel, Baby, Baby Travel, Travel Tips

Long-term Travel with Baby

No matter how you travel, travel is never “easy” when you have a little one. Between making sure Zayd’s fed, slept and bathed it’s really a full time job and a lot of the time it feels like that’s all we ever do! But, it’s also amazing! We don’t get to do as much of the touristy/sight seeing things couples who are traveling without kids get to do but, we do get to experience the joy of seeing the world through Zayds eyes. Instead of going rafting we go to the kiddy pool at water parks. Instead of going to fancy restaurants, we go to more family oriented ones that have kids play areas in them. Instead of checking out night time safaris, we go to zoos during the day. All still fun activities, just tweaked a bit.

We’ve been traveling since Zayd turned 11 months old. Bali had been a dream for us for the last few years (since Waseem and I checked it out summer of 2016) and we knew we had to go back. (Check out our favorite places to eat in Ubud and Canggu, Bali) After Zayd was born and we spent the beginning of his life between Toronto where he was born, New York where a lot of my family is and Saudi where a big part of Waseem and my family and friends are, we decided it was time to hit the road and try out this whole travel thing.

One of the most important things for us when it comes to travel is to travel as light as we possibly can and to have the most compact and functional products for our trip. From our luggage and packing cubes from Eagle Creek to our super light and comfortable Xero Shoes, to Zayds travel cot and portable high chair from Phil&Teds and really lightweight stowaway fold-able stroller from BabyZen we really wouldn’t be able to travel as easily without them.

More on our favorite travel products to come. Happy traveling!

13 Best Places to Eat In Canggu, Bali

In the span of three months my family and I spent about a month in Canggu. During that month we ate out once a day (usually an early dinner) and tried as many places around where we were staying as possible. We stayed in three different Airbnbs in three different areas so we really we able to try a variety of restaurants. Here are our top picks in Canggu. If you’re looking for our top restaurant picks in Ubud you can find them here.

WARUNG DANDELION

This adorable restaurant feels like something out of a fairy tale. It is designed so beautifully. It’s only open for dinner (it opens at 5pm), and the lighting is on point. Little string lights and lanterns all around. It has a rustic old library feel with lots of wood elements everywhere. The staff is all so welcoming. They asked us all our names and remembered them every time they brought us a dish. The food is traditional Indonesian and it’s delicious. To top it all off they had a little shed with bunnies in it. Needless to say Zayd loved them!

KAGEMUSHA

The best Japanese food in Bali! This place is a must try! It’s hidden away down a little walkway that you would never know existed unless someone told you about it. So there are no tourists there which we really liked since it’s been super busy around town these days because of high season. They don’t have sushi as you would expect a Japanese place to have but they do have bento boxes, rice bowls, and tempura options. The food is so delicious we had to go back a couple days in a row. It’s also super affordable! The food is really fresh and they use lots of local ingredients in their dishes. Craving their food as I write this post. Can’t wait to go back!

MUSE CAFE & ART

This is a little gem with unbelievably delicious food. They’re doing a soft opening at the moment and it is so worth giving it a try! It got breakfasts and main dishes. We had some Indian food cause we haven’t really been able to find good Indian since we got here and it was very good. We also had a salad that I think was possibly the best salad I’ve ever had, really filling too. It’s in a quiet area amidst the trees and situated a bit higher than the street so you kind of get that jungle feel. It’s also nice not to see the cars and bikes go by.
